With a city plan almost tailor-made for exploring, Hanoi will keep you busy for days on end. From the main thoroughfares to the maze of back alleys there's something to see around every corner.
There are several walking tours to join and they seem like a good idea as only those with a working knowledge of Hanoi's layout should venture out alone.
For the athletically minded fitness clubs abound along with Golf and Hash House Harriers running opportunities.
Bowling alleys are popular places for young Vietnamese to hang out at and usually offer fast food diners, karaoke rooms and pool tables.
Some are more up to date than others with plenty of lanes and electronic scoring, all cater to western-style ten pin bowling.
An older-style bowling alley featuring slow replay cameras, Cosmos is smaller in size and quite old fashioned.

30 lanes and a digital set up make Hanoi Star Bowl one of the more popular venues for ten pin bowling. You can buy a package for a couple of games including shoe hire which works out cheaper. There are video games downstairs and a variety of snacks and drinks on offer. The best way to get there is by taxi which should take 15 minutes going southwest out of the city centre.

Hanoi Superbowl is the only AMF bowling alley in Vietnam. Located at the Fortuna Hotel, the Superbowl offers modern lanes, shoe hire and a range of dining facilities in the hotel below.

Good fitness centres in Hanoi are limited to those at hotels catering to a predominantly tourist market. Most of the hotel centres offer day rates for non-guests and usually additionally facilities including a sauna and Jacuzzi.
Regular aerobic and other workout classes are available at some of the centres with quite a few exercise classes taking place outside around Hoan Kiem Lake.
Fitness facilities at the Sheraton Hanoi Hotel include personal trainers, a fully equipped health and fitness centre, tennis court and swimming pool. The centre features cardio machines and weight training equipment with certified personal trainers on hand to help.

Join the local athletes from six to seven every morning in a predawn power walk around Hoan Kiem Lake. There are also groups of fitness fanatics taking part in aerobics, martial arts, ballroom dancing and calisthenics. If that is too energetic for first thing in the morning then join one of the meditation or tai chi groups also taking place around the lake.

Hanoi offers golfers of all abilities plenty of choice with day passes and equipment rental available at all courses listed here.
Some of the clubs located just outside of Hanoi are of a very high standard, hosting international championships in spectacular mountainous settings. It’s best to go for a game of golf through the week as it is usually more expensive at weekends.
Situated 68km from Hanoi’s city centre on the Hanoi to Haiphong Road; Chi Linh has hosted many international championships including the Carlsberg Masters Open. There are two different courses with day passes available for both; golfers also have the option of booking accommodation at the Country Club. Bookings should be made in advance via telephone or online, discounts are offered for play on a Mondays and Wednesdays.

An 18-hole, par 72 golf course set over 108 hectares in Hanoi’s northern Soc Son district. This is Hanoi’s only Japanese-managed course and is open for day visitors and members. There is an on-site pro golf shop stocking imported Japanese brands, a Jacuzzi, restaurant and driving range. Allow around 45 minutes to get to the golf club from the city centre.

Superbly located at the foothills of the Ba Vi Mountains with accommodation, spa, swimming pool, restaurant and a host of services catering to the more seasoned golfer. Visitors are welcome with reservations required in advance. King’s Island Golf Resort and adjoining country club is 35 kilometres north of Hanoi centre. The club offers a good selection of equipment for rent and a choice of play on either a lakeside or a mountain view course with night golf also an option.
